[00:00:00] Speaker A: I know what the ghost emoji means. [00:00:02] Speaker B: Oh, I was gonna say, what does the ghost emoji mean? [00:00:04] Speaker A: I know. [00:00:04] Speaker B: Like this. Ooh. I had a good time. Is it that? [00:00:09] Speaker A: No. [00:00:09] Speaker B: Okay. [00:00:11] Speaker A: All right, here we go. Are you ready? Did you wet your whistle? [00:00:14] Speaker B: My whistle is wet. [00:00:15] Speaker A: All right, we're gonna start it. Here we go, everyone. Welcome to the guide to live. It's Wednesday, July 17, and this is your weekly hangout to talk to us about all things live streaming. Because you know what? We're the experts, and we know what's going on, and I just really messed that up. Can we do that again? [00:00:41] Speaker B: Sure. Yeah, totally. [00:00:43] Speaker A: Dude. I totally lost that. It started out so strong, and then. Let's do that. That's the first time I've ever had to redo this live. [00:00:52] Speaker B: When they record late night tv, here is the rules. Because it is live on tape. [00:00:56] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:00:57] Speaker B: If you know, like, most of those late night shows are on live on tape. And basically, the rule is don't restart unless something insane goes wrong. [00:01:06] Speaker A: I tried. I'm not saying I was off this. [00:01:09] Speaker B: I mean, you were tap dancing over here. I was. [00:01:11] Speaker A: I was like, where am I going with this? Pull me back in, please. All right, let's. Let's do it again. And here we go. [00:01:18] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:19] Speaker A: This is your weekly hangout to join us to talk about live streaming with people who really know what it's like. [00:01:24] Speaker B: Because, let's face it, no one really knows what you're talking about if you say you're a live creator. [00:01:29] Speaker A: Yeah. But we do. So, I'm Tara, and across from me is my co host, Ben. And together, along with our guest, we make up the live stream. I mean, the guide to live team. [00:01:40] Speaker B: Yeah, the live stream. [00:01:40] Speaker A: The live streaming guide to live team. That's right. [00:01:44] Speaker B: So today we're going to be talking about audio. Audio, like, the basics of live streaming audio. Because sometimes we talk about stuff that's up in our head and, like, the heart of live streaming and the techniques and the creativity. But some of this is just technical. You gotta get the sound from your mouth into the phone somehow and out to other people. And TikTok takes care of the bit once it's in the phone or the device, but there's varying quality. So we're gonna talk about that. [00:02:15] Speaker A: Yeah. I was actually speaking about this the other day about how cool TikTok Live is, because this specifically, when you use this platform, you basically getting your own little broadcasting channel. [00:02:28] Speaker B: Yeah. Your own tv station. [00:02:30] Speaker A: Your own tv station did. [00:02:32] Speaker B: So as far as I understand, it. In the US, there are like PBS stations where the PBS. You can kind of have your own show. Is that right? [00:02:44] Speaker A: Am I. Uhf is like a channel. It's like kind of like AMF. You know, Am Fm. You know how you can have like an AM channel here? [00:02:52] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:02:53] Speaker A: No, it's like free channel. Like it's the same thing. [00:02:55] Speaker B: Okay. [00:02:56] Speaker A: With tv. But I don't, you know, I don't think people really do that anymore. I don't know if it exists anymore. [00:03:00] Speaker B: Okay, so that was all that was available. [00:03:02] Speaker A: Now you can turn off. [00:03:03] Speaker B: Who cares what happened in the past? Who cares? [00:03:06] Speaker A: That's done. This is a new day, this is a new dawn. [00:03:09] Speaker B: But how do we get so. It's very cool. Works really well. Fun times. You can go live streaming to get your audio into the phone. First of all, you can turn your phone on. I think that's the most important thing is like, how do I get started? Everyone should turn their phone on and livestream. [00:03:27] Speaker A: Yes. If that. If you don't have anything extra, like a mic or anything, just turn on your phone and stream from there. You know, make sure your room isn't like a big room that has echoes in it, though, like that. That's probably find a nice room that's like low echoes. [00:03:41] Speaker B: But you really, you really don't need to do a lot to get going. No, and the reason why we say that is because there's a lot of people who don't need any of all the stuff that we're gonna be talking about here. They're not gonna need DJ or podcast quality audio. Someone like the jungle skipper or who's out at Disney or other streamers who are moving around all day New York. Like people like that. They just don't need what we're talking about. [00:04:08] Speaker A: No, not all of the equipment. None. [00:04:11] Speaker B: So starting off and just figuring out what your stream is, is probably the most important thing. [00:04:16] Speaker A: Yes. And then after you've figured it out, like try it with just your phone and see how it sounds. See how you sound. If you think, okay, I'm outside, the wind's hitting me, there's lots of other background sounds. It's drowning me out. Then maybe that's a time to think about getting a lapel mic or something. Just something simple. But we're going to talk about something that's a lot. It's a little bit more in depth than just that. [00:04:37] Speaker B: So we're going to talk about interfaces. So what is an audio interface? [00:04:41] Speaker A: What is it? So it sounds like intimidating to someone who doesn't know. [00:04:47] Speaker B: It's an interface that converts an analog signal that comes. This is analog, goes into a microphone. [00:04:53] Speaker A: Analog. [00:04:53] Speaker B: All microphones convert analog into digital into a digital format that can be read by your computer or your phone and. [00:05:00] Speaker A: Then played over a speaker or some sort. [00:05:03] Speaker B: Well, that's later on. The phone deals with all of that or the device, but the interface is the bit between the two. Okay. [00:05:10] Speaker A: It's the thing. It's like the switchboard in between. [00:05:12] Speaker B: Yeah. So this I want to show you. I want to show you what isn't an interface. And that some people sometimes start to get confused at the beginning. So if you pick up the mix. Five right there. [00:05:26] Speaker A: I have one. Hold that right here in front of me. Gonna hold it up right here. [00:05:30] Speaker B: So this is. Sometimes I see people, particularly who come from the music world, thinking, I just need to pick a plug in a mixer. Right. So this is a mixer. [00:05:39] Speaker A: This is a mixer. [00:05:40] Speaker B: And you're able to plug in different audio channels and you can mix them together and you have one output. And I've seen this multiple times. I just want to flag it as a thing not to get caught in. This is just an audio mixer, not an interface. So it's going to struggle to connect with your phone. [00:05:58] Speaker A: Yeah. Okay, so this is not what we want. Let's throw it away. [00:06:03] Speaker B: Yeah. I thought you were gonna do it then you could have done. That would have been. [00:06:06] Speaker A: I don't damage it. [00:06:07] Speaker B: Let's make a viral moment. [00:06:09] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. I saw the guy who's the lead singer of Green Day, Billy Joe Joe. Billy Joe was getting upset about. He only had a few minutes left on his show. And it was like, wherever the venue was, it was counting down his time. Oh, yeah, I only have 1 minute left. He was like really mad. He's like, now. And he like, ranted the whole minute. And then he said, I have zero minutes left. You know what I think about that? He took his guitar off and smashed. Smashed it on stage. I was like, yeah, yes, those are the days. But anyway, I was thinking, like, I could have smashed that mix just like Billy Joe. [00:06:45] Speaker B: But what was he doing? He created a moment that you just talked about. And now people have said green day, all because he did that. If he hadn't smashed his guitar. The moment when I'm being created. [00:06:54] Speaker A: He didn't like being told he only had 1 minute left to play. Yeah. In case he wanted to do some longer. Like, he wanted to be like, jamming on, like, jamming on, jamming on like a jam band. He wanted to be a jam band that night. And jam on. [00:07:08] Speaker B: So let's get up another interface here. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna bring up onto the stage the zoom p four. [00:07:14] Speaker A: Oh, the zoom p four. This is a very, okay, so what. [00:07:18] Speaker B: This is small, compact little guy, and I'm gonna. [00:07:22] Speaker A: Little buddy. [00:07:23] Speaker B: This is an interface that a lot of people started out with. We started out using it. I know a lot of people in the agency have used it. The reason why, let's just talk through literally what it does. Okay. So if you just hold it up, because people can't really see that. This allows you to plug in four microphones at the top. So if you, you tip it down there. So we'll get into, you can see as we go through this audio is broken up into several parts. There's the microphone that picks up your voice, which is a whole other kettle of fish. [00:07:57] Speaker A: Yes. [00:07:58] Speaker B: The wire that goes to it, the interface that Tara's holding. [00:08:01] Speaker A: So in this case, that's three components right there. [00:08:04] Speaker B: Right. [00:08:04] Speaker A: Just to get your voice into the interface, into the thing, you need a microphone and then you need the actual cord to go back into here. [00:08:11] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:08:11] Speaker A: To connect the microphone to this. [00:08:13] Speaker B: Yeah. So at this point, why would you need four inputs? Right. Maybe you're not going to need four inputs, but this is where it why we say start off live streaming, because you might want music or you might want additional sound effects that are going on, on your stream. So at this point, you could plug in a microphone into this, plus an additional. Could be a computer. Could be, I was going to say. [00:08:39] Speaker A: Have music go play a cd player. [00:08:41] Speaker B: Just plug in a cd player. Don't do that. [00:08:44] Speaker A: Plug in at eight track, you could. [00:08:45] Speaker B: Be in 2024 and plug in. You can plug in anything that sends a signal, an audio signal out so you can be playing music. So now, on this one, you notice there's little dials on it. So you could then turn up your microphone volume and turn down the music, or vice versa. It's designed for podcasts. [00:09:04] Speaker A: It's designed. And it's actually, it's called the pod track p four. Yeah, that's what this one is, the pod track p four. [00:09:10] Speaker B: You'll notice there. Are you able to hold it so it's in focus? Yeah. You'll notice, I mean, it's very simple, very mobile. [00:09:19] Speaker A: Yes. [00:09:20] Speaker B: And we're not, I'm not very selling this. There are several other versions. [00:09:24] Speaker A: There's an irige. [00:09:25] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. There's an irig, which is a similar kind of. [00:09:30] Speaker A: We have in one of these, we've. [00:09:31] Speaker B: Used the eye rig as well. [00:09:32] Speaker A: Yeah, we have. [00:09:33] Speaker B: And again, we're going to go into way more depth in this, in blueprint. [00:09:36] Speaker A: How light this is. Like, literally, I'm holding it with. [00:09:40] Speaker B: Now it sounds like we're selling it again. [00:09:42] Speaker A: No, but I just. It's cool. It's cool. [00:09:45] Speaker B: So you can now turn up. Turn everything up and down. You notice? Hold it up one more time. There are four little buttons on there. These ones? No, the four in a square. [00:09:55] Speaker A: Oh, these? [00:09:56] Speaker B: Yeah. There. They have some little pre recorded samples on them. Like, load it on. Load it on. And using a memory card, you could. [00:10:04] Speaker A: Have an air horn. [00:10:05] Speaker B: Could have an air horn. [00:10:08] Speaker A: If you. If you like me, you want air horn. [00:10:10] Speaker B: So that's about $120 for the price point, roughly, for people for this one to kind of, like, get a benchmark on it. Really good piece of equipment. Very robust. And all of those things inside it. What's happening is it's doing some processing on your voice. So it is boosting levels. It's compressing levels, making it sound warmer. It has settings in there, so you can turn up different elements on your voice, but it's kind of built in, and it's doing it. So it's gonna make you sound better than just you going into your phone, assuming you've just got a reasonable. Even if you had, like, a $20 microphone. [00:10:49] Speaker A: Yeah. Yes. Let's. Let's talk about something else other than that one. [00:10:54] Speaker B: Yeah. So you got the rode procaster? [00:10:55] Speaker A: I do. I have the rode procaster duo. [00:10:58] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:10:58] Speaker A: I'm gonna hold that one up. [00:11:00] Speaker B: Yeah. Why don't you turn it on? That will look, um. [00:11:02] Speaker A: Oh, this is gonna look so cool. [00:11:04] Speaker B: So the powers here, it's got four different channels. This is what Terry uses for the totally awesome game. [00:11:11] Speaker A: Totally awesome game. [00:11:12] Speaker B: Yeah. So maybe you can just talk. I know it's not plugged in, but it kind of roughly talk through what you like, the main bits you use. [00:11:18] Speaker A: So, first of all, you plug your microphone into here and your earphones into here so you can hear yourself into the microphone, and you don't get that feedback loop. Like, if you didn't have the earphones. [00:11:31] Speaker B: You can describe it for people who are not watching. [00:11:35] Speaker A: So there is a port to plug in your microphone here. And right beside of it, there's a couple of earphone jacks that you can place, and then they. They correlate with the different. So these, these sliding, little sliding bars here are your volume control for your microphones. You can even mute yourself if you need to. Like, if you have to cough or something, you can mute yourself. It's like, I'd be talking like this right now. Mute myself. See, I just muted myself. Yeah. Which is cool. And then sound effects music. All of that's here. So the game show, like, whenever there's, like, music going on, I hit these buttons. Theme songs there. Yeah. And then you can adjust your volume for your earphones up here. This little guy. [00:12:20] Speaker B: So really, like, gives you a lot of control over what you're doing. A lot of control what you're doing. You can have stuff loaded up for your shows. And why would you want all of that? Like, we talk about it all the time. The richer, more. I mean, think about it. [00:12:32] Speaker A: The more content you have, the better, I think. [00:12:34] Speaker B: The richer the experience, the better. [00:12:36] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:12:37] Speaker B: If you had a tv show that just. They didn't have music on it, it's a very different experience. Like, music, like, little stings, sound effects. All of those things go to contribute to a really enjoyable stream. [00:12:52] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. It's like, I always refer back to Rachel and Ross, and it's like listening to the. You can't watch that without the u two song in the background, like, when they're running to each other. [00:13:02] Speaker B: Wait, I don't know what you're talking about. [00:13:03] Speaker A: You can't live without you. [00:13:07] Speaker B: That's your one musical moment that really. [00:13:09] Speaker A: Yeah, I mean, it's very. It's like. It was very. [00:13:12] Speaker B: It was powerful. [00:13:13] Speaker A: Was. [00:13:13] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:13:14] Speaker A: Really, really touched me back then. [00:13:15] Speaker B: Yeah. We were talking the other day, a group of people, and I think two people said that they. They cried at the Titanic. [00:13:27] Speaker A: Yeah, I can. [00:13:28] Speaker B: What did you say that you cried at? Which movie? [00:13:31] Speaker A: Oh, return of the Jedi. When Yoda died, I was so happy when I saw him again. [00:13:39] Speaker B: Yeah. So you really. When it comes. When it comes down to interfaces. Right. You're gonna have to make a choice. Do you start off on something that is more manageable, financially, particularly, and know that you're gonna upgrade over time or do you take a jump to something like that procaster, which is actually. That's closer to $400. [00:14:01] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:14:01] Speaker B: So it's a larger investment. [00:14:03] Speaker A: Yeah. Can even record and store it in there. There's a memory card where you can record stuff and keep it on your actual physical. [00:14:11] Speaker B: On the drive. [00:14:12] Speaker A: On the drive, yeah. Yeah. [00:14:14] Speaker B: So basically, I would say if you've been streaming for a while, you've been doing it through your phone. It's so noticeable now, the difference between people streaming through audio interfaces where it sounds good versus through the phone. First of all, just as a viewer myself, when I'm scrolling and obviously a richer, warmer, better audio is gonna be. Statistically, let's just set aside any creativity or anything like that. Statistically, if you have something that doesn't sound good and something that does sound good, which one is gonna get the most people stopping on it? All things being equal. [00:14:49] Speaker A: Yes. Which one is the one? I will scroll right past the one that doesn't sound good because I don't wanna hear that. I wanna hear something that's pleasing to my ears. So I'll stay on that one. [00:14:59] Speaker B: Just purely on that. [00:15:00] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:00] Speaker B: Like if we're looking for people to stop on our streams and that is part of the game here. Yeah, please stop. Please stay. And you can do that by just the quality being up. [00:15:09] Speaker A: Yeah. It's like the sound of your stream can say so many words. [00:15:15] Speaker B: Lovely. [00:15:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:15:16] Speaker B: Put that on a t shirt. You put that on a pair of pants down the side. [00:15:25] Speaker A: You call them dungarees, overalls. [00:15:28] Speaker B: I'm not talking about dungarees. That would be insane to. To make a pair. [00:15:31] Speaker A: You ever wear the dungarees with just one? [00:15:34] Speaker B: No, I wasn't in. I wasn't in a boy band. [00:15:36] Speaker A: You don't have to be in a boy band. [00:15:37] Speaker B: That's what you did. White t shirt one. [00:15:40] Speaker A: That was the style for a lot of. But I was big into hip hop dancing in the. So I wore that stuff cuz I was a date. I was like hip hop dancing in the outfit. [00:15:48] Speaker B: Yeah. Different scene in the UK. Yeah, definitely. We didn't. That wasn't there. I think it is time for feature or fake. [00:15:59] Speaker A: Feature or fake is my favorite time. Two of the features are real, one of them is fake. Fake, fake, fake. If you're just tuning in and you don't know what future fake is, this is a ongoing game that we play on every single podcast where Ben, the game master, comes up with three different features from a live streaming platform. And what, two of them are correct? Two of them are actual real features, and one of them is one he's just made. And he is the creative director of Blue. So his imagination is very vivid, I will say that. So some of the. It's really hard. So right now, the score, me, and then the you all, the audience, you all get to participate. And then Ben, if we guess wrong, he wins, he gets a point. And standing, the standing score as of right now is 2212 for me, two for you all, and one for Ben. So Ben is not in the lead. We are tied. Me and you guys are tied. [00:17:11] Speaker B: Okay. [00:17:12] Speaker A: It's awesome. Thank you. We're gonna take down the game master. So without further ado, Ben, would you like to tell us about the feature fakes this week? [00:17:21] Speaker B: Okay, so we've got three potential features. [00:17:25] Speaker A: All right, let's do it. [00:17:26] Speaker B: Number one, everyone knows about the dual camera, do they? [00:17:32] Speaker A: The dual camera? [00:17:33] Speaker B: I hope so. Do you remember when it first came out? [00:17:35] Speaker A: Some people didn't have it. [00:17:37] Speaker B: Everyone wanted it. [00:17:38] Speaker A: Everyone was so upset. It's being beta tested. You're just not in the test that's getting it right now. [00:17:44] Speaker B: And for a long time, there was the little square there with the. With the corners. [00:17:48] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:17:48] Speaker B: And then there was a circle. [00:17:50] Speaker A: Circle. [00:17:50] Speaker B: And again, remember this, not everyone gets all of these features. So you may not have it. Doesn't mean it's not fake. So feature number one is the dual camera has just introduced star mode. [00:18:02] Speaker A: What? [00:18:03] Speaker B: You can have yourself in a star. Oh, right on the circle. [00:18:06] Speaker A: Oh. Oh. That's kind of weird because I don't think my face would fit in a star. [00:18:10] Speaker B: Well, it's. It's obviously big enough that it's not like one of those plunging, pointy ones. [00:18:16] Speaker A: What if your face went into it and it became the shape of a star? Yeah. [00:18:20] Speaker B: AI reconfigures your face to it. [00:18:23] Speaker A: You look like the hardy you look. The Carl's junior star. [00:18:26] Speaker B: Feature number two, you can promote your stream in the three following ways. [00:18:30] Speaker A: Okay? [00:18:31] Speaker B: So when you're. Everyone knows about the promote function, you can choose where it goes. So you can choose to get more product purchases, you can choose more live viewers, or you can choose more live followers. Okay, that's number two, three ways to promote your streams. And number three, you can go in and copy your subscription link. So you now you have a heart. Your live subscription link. You have a hard link which you can then just go post anywhere on the Internet. [00:19:00] Speaker A: Oh, so because nothing on Instagram, nothing on, on there is. You're able to cut and paste and. But. So now you can copy your link and paste it anywhere for your subscriptions. [00:19:09] Speaker B: Exactly. I've just started a poll, so it's. [00:19:11] Speaker A: This one's a hard one this time. [00:19:13] Speaker B: One, two or three, dual camera star shape. So what we're doing, remember, is you are identifying which one of those is the fake. Two of them are real, one of them is fake. I want you to tell me which one it is. [00:19:24] Speaker A: Two of them. One of them is fake, two of them are real, and one of them is fake. Reach out and touch someone that was the little jingle for the, for the telephone company back in the day. Reach out. Reach out and touch someone. Nowadays you can't say that. [00:19:40] Speaker B: Can't say that. [00:19:41] Speaker A: No, you can't. Like, may I reach out? Reach out and may I touch someone? [00:19:46] Speaker B: You can't ask someone else if you can touch someone else. That doesn't work either. You're just making someone else complicit. [00:19:57] Speaker A: The jingles from back in the day just can't. You cannot say. Say them this day and age. Yeah, they're not appropriate. [00:20:04] Speaker B: All righty. The poll has ended. It is time to reveal the winners of feature first. [00:20:11] Speaker A: Remember, because I can't see the poll. [00:20:13] Speaker B: I'm going to come to Tara. If you could talk me through your thinking, which one is the feature and which one is the fake? [00:20:19] Speaker A: So I think the features that are actually real features are the promoting and. [00:20:29] Speaker B: Choosing three ways to promote. [00:20:30] Speaker A: Three ways to promote. And I think that the subscription being cut, copied and paste and stuff, that's real. I don't think that there's a star shaped. [00:20:39] Speaker B: Okay. [00:20:40] Speaker A: I just think that's silly. [00:20:41] Speaker B: You think it's silly? [00:20:42] Speaker A: I think it's silly. It just makes me think. Silly, silly, silly. [00:20:46] Speaker B: Okay, let's go and check the poll here. [00:20:48] Speaker A: What do you guys think? [00:20:48] Speaker B: Oh, it's a landslide. It is a landslide. [00:20:52] Speaker A: Everyone else thinks the same as me. [00:20:53] Speaker B: Dual cameras star shape is firmly the crowd's favorite to be a fake. Fake. Nobody said that copying the live sub link is a fake. [00:21:04] Speaker A: They said zero people. [00:21:06] Speaker B: So let's get into it and I'm going to start there. Everyone is correct. That is copying the live sub link is a feature you can use. [00:21:13] Speaker A: Yes. [00:21:13] Speaker B: So congratulations. No one chose that. No one in the audience chose it. Tara didn't choose it. Which means we'll do the dual camera star shape. [00:21:27] Speaker A: Okay. [00:21:28] Speaker B: Is it a feature or is it a fake? That one is the fake. [00:21:33] Speaker A: Yes. [00:21:34] Speaker B: You all did it. [00:21:36] Speaker A: That's another win for us. Guys, guess what that means. [00:21:39] Speaker B: Yeah, you. That means. [00:21:45] Speaker A: That's what that means. [00:21:46] Speaker B: The birthday horn is getting confusing. Is it the birthday horn? [00:21:49] Speaker A: I need two different horns. I need to put another. [00:21:51] Speaker B: Hazel got the birthday horn. We need another sound for. And it can't be like a cricket. So that means that it is true. You can promote your stream in three different ways. Yeah. [00:22:02] Speaker A: Yeah. That's really cool. [00:22:03] Speaker B: Remember that when we talk about promoting streams, like, so what are the three. [00:22:06] Speaker A: Different ways you can, you can promote. [00:22:07] Speaker B: And try and get more products sold. [00:22:11] Speaker A: That's good. If you're doing a TikTok shop stream. [00:22:13] Speaker B: Yeah, sure. You can try and promote and get more followers, or you can try and promote and get more viewers. [00:22:18] Speaker A: Yes. [00:22:19] Speaker B: So as we've said with before, they. [00:22:21] Speaker A: Don'T mean that their views don't mean that they're gonna follow. [00:22:25] Speaker B: And so it's kind of loosely saying you're gonna get more viewers, but really what you're gonna do is get more impressions. [00:22:30] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:22:30] Speaker B: And then it's your job to turn them into viewers. [00:22:32] Speaker A: Yeah. That is the truth. [00:22:34] Speaker B: But congratulations, everyone. That means it is now 3313 to the audience. Three to Tara. Three one point to me, chicken boots. [00:22:44] Speaker A: That means booties. [00:22:47] Speaker B: Have you ever said that before? [00:22:48] Speaker A: No, but there's an old phrase from the nineties with boots and what a. [00:22:51] Speaker B: Great time to bring out the boots. There's some congratulations to everyone who chose the correct shape on feature or fate. We're going to move on to the question of the day today. [00:23:01] Speaker A: Yes, question of the day. [00:23:02] Speaker B: And if you listen to this. So we record this podcast twice a week, Mondays and Wednesdays. Goes out in the normal places. You get podcasts, but there are some additional fun sound effects added into it. [00:23:15] Speaker A: Yes. [00:23:16] Speaker B: And the one that was posted on Monday or yesterday, Monday's recording has a little song that Tara sung, which makes. It's the feature or fake theme song. Right. Now, I wouldn't say it's high art. It's not high arthem, but it's art. [00:23:35] Speaker A: It's art. [00:23:36] Speaker B: So question of the day, tick tock. [00:23:38] Speaker A: And you don't stop. [00:23:40] Speaker B: Comes from Saul gravy. [00:23:42] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:23:42] Speaker B: Okay, so this is, in short, they're asking what is the best time to stream? But I'm gonna read out the whole question because I think it's really relevant and it's something that we keep getting time and time against. Like when. When's the best time to stream, they say. What I'm curious about all your y'all's thoughts on a Friday night stream. I see a lot of the big gaming streamers do. Family friendly Fridays start to wonder if there's something to that and if it'd be worth doing. Myself, I mainly do comedy, so that's not intended for all ages. So I felt like Fridays are particularly slow. [00:24:15] Speaker A: Yes. That reminds me of TGI Friday back in the day when we were younger and that, like network television, I like to compare this to network television and audience because to me I feel like it's very similar. There's a transition of watching network tv to watching this stuff now. Like live streaming. [00:24:35] Speaker B: Right. [00:24:35] Speaker A: And I think on Fridays was when we had all the family shows, like full house, family matters. Like, I forget family ties. Like, all of those shows came on on Friday because like the people who weren't stuck at home with the families were out doing stuff. [00:24:53] Speaker B: Right. I. [00:24:54] Speaker A: So it makes sense why family friendly Fridays are going on. [00:24:58] Speaker B: Yeah, I think it's a broad way of looking at this. It's like you don't necessarily have to reinvent the wheel. There's definitely some differences that we're gonna talk about in terms of like, when and answering that question. But the broad strokes is like, when did tv do it? Cause they've spent a long time figuring out when people are around and available. [00:25:20] Speaker A: And available. [00:25:20] Speaker B: Yeah. The difference being that that was on televisions which were fixed in a room. [00:25:26] Speaker A: Right. Now people can be available anywhere if they have a mobile device. [00:25:29] Speaker B: Right. So that is part of a core difference. But there are still times of day that people do things. People roughly eat at the same time. [00:25:39] Speaker A: I think they go to their kids sports activities, they go to shows, they go out on dates, they go out with their friends, they drive home, they drive home from work, they drive to work, they commute. You know, there's lots of times when people can't. Or, or you're like doing a thing. It's like the family thing, like you're doing a family weekend thing. You might have your phone on you, but that doesn't mean you can like get on your phone and start like scrolling. Yeah, scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. [00:26:07] Speaker B: So there are the obvious times. Obviously now you have to take into account time zones in the US. [00:26:12] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:26:13] Speaker B: Probably the easiest thing to do. Generally your stream gets sent out to the people that are closest to you. So if in doubt, just consider like prime time your time zone. [00:26:25] Speaker A: Yes. That's the majority of where the feet where your stream will be set to. [00:26:31] Speaker B: So here's the complexity to this. Right. So it particularly depends on what you're trying to do and gain because there is also a factor where there's a lot of live streamers who come on in the evenings, live streaming. There's more live streamers. And the bigger streamers tend to be streaming in the early evening through to late night. Two in some cases. [00:26:56] Speaker A: I wouldn't call that late night, I call that early. [00:26:58] Speaker B: Well, I'm saying from like 08:00 p.m. through to kind of the break of dawn. [00:27:03] Speaker A: Tick tock. And you don't stop. [00:27:04] Speaker B: That was what you did earlier. [00:27:06] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:27:06] Speaker B: I missed it. [00:27:07] Speaker A: I know. It's okay. [00:27:09] Speaker B: I would have just started beatboxing, but we're in the middle of something, so I won't right now, but if you listen on next Monday I will definitely beatbox for everyone here. Follow for that please. What are we talking about? [00:27:23] Speaker A: Oh, the going out where your initial stream gets broadcast. [00:27:28] Speaker B: So there are more streamers on. So there's actually more competition and audience being sucked up by larger streamers in the evenings. So there's definitely a school of thought that particularly as you're starting out a little bit earlier in the day, means that there's less competition. But then what do you do? Do you stay at that time because that was the initial audience that you got or do you explore times? [00:27:55] Speaker A: Yeah, I always say explore, explore, see what you find. If you notice that you're getting more interaction at a certain time then that you might get less views but you're getting more engagement. That's a positive sign. That's something I would definitely do more of. I think for me from a professional point of view. [00:28:13] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, because the thing will turn into the views. It will and we're not. So I mean just a really all the way back and we've been talking about this now for months, it isn't about the number of views, the number of concurrent viewers. It is not like we see people doing exceptionally well with lower view numbers. And things have changed over the years. [00:28:36] Speaker A: Over the last two years, several creators come up to me and they're like, you know, I hear a lot about views being low and yeah, mine are low too. And I'm very engaging. I have a very high engaging stream and it's like I have higher numbers but it's nothing like I was getting before. She's like, but guess what? I'm making more, right? I might have lower numbers but I'm making more. It's more engaging. Yeah, yeah. [00:28:58] Speaker B: And that's okay. I think that's becoming more of the norm. You also got to look at the number over time as well. Remember, the format isn't for necessarily people sticking around for long periods of time. I know there are people like the audience here, you watching, you're sticking around and we love that. And I know all of your communities, you have people who are there for the whole stream, whether that's an hour or 5 hours. But most people are looking for shorter 510 minutes births of entertainment. [00:29:28] Speaker A: Even less than that, two to three minutes is like the average amount of time people are watching your stream at a specific time. They might leave and then find you again and watch for a little bit longer, you know, so that is also possible. [00:29:43] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. And I can see people kind of saying the same there. It's like the, the view numbers aren't necessarily up, but the engagement is up. And really think about it at its core, like, live streaming is the goal of to get tens of thousand viewers concurrently. Like maybe there'll be a time in the future when it's so big and so popular that that's totally plausible for the larger streamers. But really what you're looking to do is build an audience that is large enough to sustain you. And there is that idea of the thousand truth fans, a thousand true fans. If you don't know that theory, I forget. If anyone with a better memory than me can drop it in the chat, that'd be really useful. The thousand true fans is kind of like a proposition that as a creator, if you had 1000 people engage in everything that you do, buy everything that you do, come to the shows, buy the merch, get the t shirt, contribute in that way. That's what you need to have a sustainable career. Like, obviously I think it's a throwaway number, but the point is it's not 100,000. We're not talking about followers here. We're talking about people who were engaged in your stream, in your community. [00:30:58] Speaker A: Yeah. And I think, you know, when live was a lot newer and there weren't as many users on the platform and there weren't as many viewers, the audience share was like, it was less people and it was like you got more of the audience share. Like, the pieces of the pie were bigger then, and it's just over time, it's gotten lower and lower and it's not, that is not what makes you successful. Having a lot of people watching you on live is not like, what makes you, that is not the success. Yeah, like, your, your concurrent viewers are not your success. That's not the tag. What is successful is the community that you've developed and how, how hard, can you imagine how hard it would be if you had a really, a large community of thousands and thousands of people like that were actively engaged all the time? Like how hard of a job that. [00:31:50] Speaker B: Would be very difficult because it's not, it's nothing. It's nice to have 10,000 people come to a gig. One, because you get paid a lot in that one moment. I'm talking about gigs or theater, but you're not having to engage with them all, whereas this is, you are, and you are better off engaging with a lot, a larger group of people. So there is a limit to when it becomes like, the interaction becomes, like, diminishing returns. I'm not quite sure what that is different for everybody. [00:32:17] Speaker A: Like, when you go to a big show. I know I've been to, I love, like, certain artists, and I've been to when they were just performing in, like, a bar, and it was like 30, 40 people, you know, and then I've been to when they were, like, in an arena and not like, the intimacy, it's like, it's not the same. Like, I liked it better when it was smaller. [00:32:36] Speaker B: Community, you like to be able to get on stage and try and get. [00:32:39] Speaker A: A drumstick, get a little massage in. No, I'm just kidding. [00:32:42] Speaker B: What are you talking about? [00:32:43] Speaker A: I used to do massages. [00:32:44] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:32:45] Speaker A: I used to actually do massage for the music artists that would come into the local venue because I was a massage therapist at the time who. [00:32:53] Speaker B: Give us a couple of names. Who you've given a rubber. [00:32:56] Speaker A: I don't think I should do that because I don't think I'm supposed to talk about who I've given massages to. [00:33:00] Speaker B: It's like a client massage masseuse's code. [00:33:03] Speaker A: Yes. But I will say one of them was a something. [00:33:08] Speaker B: You're about to just give it away. [00:33:09] Speaker A: Something. Had. It, had the name creator in the title. [00:33:13] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's true. Music artists with the. That's a great, great extra little game. Yeah. Who has terra massage? [00:33:21] Speaker A: That's probably the most famous one. Yeah. [00:33:23] Speaker B: I think it's time to wrap up Tara on that bombshell. Thanks, everybody, for listening to the guide to live. We, we had a lot of fun. I enjoyed doing this. [00:33:33] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:33:33] Speaker B: Congratulations, everyone, on, thanks for coming and. [00:33:36] Speaker A: Hanging out with us and playing games and getting all the new information. [00:33:40] Speaker B: Yeah. So the, the calendar keeps churning in with more and more stuff, more and. [00:33:54] Speaker A: More events to find. [00:33:55] Speaker B: Yeah. Can't wait to hang out with you again. Speak to you soon. [00:33:58] Speaker A: All right, see you, everyone. [00:33:59] Speaker B: Cheerio. Bye.
